"SHE TALKS" FROM COWGIRL TO CONGRESS - BPW NY
Tuesday, September 22, 2020, 3:00 PM until 4:00 PM
Are you fascinated by the suffragettes and their journey to get the right for women to vote? What do descendents of suffragettes know and what stories do they tell? Come join us on September 22 when Mila Johannsen tells the tale of her great grandmother's (Jessie Haver Butler) journey as a suffragette. You'll be inspired.
About the Speaker:
Mila Johansen is a professional speaker and writer. She is the author of twenty-two plays and musicals that circle the globe along with two teaching manuals, "101 Theatre Games" and "50 Scenes to Go". She has written just under ten screenplays and enjoying the process. Mila has one YA historical novel finished and ready to publish, "The Four Thieves" along with several children’s picture books. She also has three provocative upmarket fiction novels almost completed.
Mila has just finished her book, "From Cowgirl to Congress", about her famous suffragette grandmother, Jessie Haver Butler, for the 100th anniversary of women winning the right to vote. Jessie was there on the front lines with Carrie Chapman Catt and Alice Paul as the lobbyist in D.C. for the movement. Before that, in 1911, she put together the Pulitzer School of Journalism at Columbia University.
Jessie later opened a series of speech classes and taught thousands of women public speaking. She often spoke along Eleanor Roosevelt who enthusiastically endorsed Jessie's classes. When Jessie was in her early 90s, Mila followed her around as she shared the podium, several times, with Gloria Steinem, Marlo Thomas and Jane Fonda. Mila is now a professional public speaker—trained by Jessie.
Mila lives on her organic citrus ranch in Northern California with her husband, four dogs and a cat.
